Embroidering the Mantle of the World.

Bordando el Manto Terrestre, Remedios Varo, 1961.

I can't stop gazing at this painting; I adore it, and not just because it features in one of my favourite passages from one of my favourite novels (Thomas Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49). I just find it so beautifully intricate and full of questions.

Are the golden-haired women captive, or volunteers? Is the side of the tower actually open to the elements, or are we simply omniscient voyeurs? What is the male figure mixing in his smokey vial? Are they crafting the world they want and are too afraid to seek beyond their windows? Or one that is being dictated to them?

On an entirely different note, I can't stop listening to the new Foo Fighters album.
You used to say I couldn't save you enough,
So I've been saving it up, I started saving it up.
And when you said I couldn't give you enough,
I started giving you up, I started giving you up.

What a good movie. I have had many requests for her hair cut. Great style icon.
